Human-Centred Innovation & the Double Diamond: From Problem Discovery to Entrepreneurial Delivery

This interactive workshop guides entrepreneurial students through the Double Diamond framework to bridge technical execution with human-centred problem-solving. Moving away from traditional transmissive delivery—where solutions are directly prescribed—the facilitator adopts a constructivist approach.

This shift empowers students to actively construct knowledge by navigating ambiguity, tolerating uncertainty, and embracing “desirable difficulties” to ground their ventures in real human needs.

The workshop begins in the Problem Space with the Discover Phase. Here, students practice divergent thinking through qualitative user research, stakeholder mapping, and field interviews. Facilitators guide participants to resist “solution jumping” and stay open-minded about user contexts. Transitioning into the Define Phase, students shift to convergent thinking. Using thematic analysis and synthesis, teams synthesize qualitative findings to isolate core user friction points and formulate a sharp, user-validated “How Might We” problem statement supported by sound empirical judgment.

Next, participants enter the Solution Space during the Develop Phase. Embracing a divergent mindset, students employ creative techniques like SCAMPER, TRIZ, and “Worst Possible Idea” to step outside comfortable coding or business habits. They engage in rapid, low-fidelity paper prototyping and Krug-style usability testing to iteratively refine potential answers before committing capital or technical development.

Finally, the Deliver Phase converges on communicating the chosen resolution. Rather than presenting static, “shiny” prototypes, teams articulate a well-reasoned argument linking qualitative research data directly to design choices. They pitch their refined concepts through formats like business cases, live demos, or academic reports. Throughout the session, the facilitator helps students move between micro tasks, meso process connections, and macro context, cultivating a resilient mindset where failure is viewed as information rather than disaster.

Ultimately, students realize that viable entrepreneurial innovation requires both human validation and disciplined process iteration.
